Why do gourmand scents like vanilla and cotton candy feel so irresistible? Explore the psychology behind dessert-inspired fragrances.

Why Are We Obsessed With Gourmand Scents?

I have a confession.

I own a body mist that smells like cotton candy.

And vanilla.

And if someone releases a fragrance that smells like a bakery, there’s a decent chance I’ll at least stop and smell it.

Which makes me wonder…

Why are so many of us trying to smell like dessert?

Some Scents Feel Like Comfort Food

One of the biggest trends in personal care over the past several years has been the rise of gourmand scents—fragrances inspired by foods like vanilla, caramel, marshmallow, chocolate, cookies, fruit, and candy.

They’re everywhere.

And apparently, I’m part of the problem.

There’s something undeniably comforting about them.

They’re warm.

Familiar.

Yummy.

They don’t just smell good.

They often remind us of birthdays, holidays, bakeries, and childhood treats.

Our Brains Love Familiar Smells

Consumer psychology offers an interesting explanation.

Our sense of smell is closely linked to memory and emotion.

That’s why one scent can instantly transport us to a particular place or moment.

A vanilla body mist isn’t simply vanilla.

For some people, it smells like baking with family.

Cotton candy might remind someone of summer fairs.

Chocolate may evoke certain celebrations.

The fragrance becomes much bigger than the ingredients inside the bottle.

There Is One Small Hazard…

Of course, gourmand fragrances aren’t completely without risk.

At least in my experience.

Sometimes I catch a whiff of my own body mist…

…and suddenly I’m wondering where I can find a cupcake.

Or literally anything involving sugar.

I have no scientific evidence that wearing vanilla makes you crave dessert.

But my stomach has developed a very strong opinion on the matter.

Maybe We’re Really Wearing Memories

We’re not simply choosing fragrances.

We’re choosing feelings.

Comfort.

Nostalgia.

Warmth.

Joy.

That’s what makes gourmand scents so interesting.

They don’t just help us smell nice.

They invite us to carry a tiny dessert shop—and maybe a favorite childhood memory—with us wherever we go.

That’s pretty sweet.
