Why Does Every Lotion Want to Take Me Somewhere Tropical?
Justice for Iceland. Canada deserves a signature lotion, too.
Why Does Every Lotion Want to Take Me Somewhere Tropical?
Walk down the personal care aisle during the summer and it becomes obvious that every lotion has tropical vacation plans.
One promises a weekend in the Bahamas.
Another wants to meet you in Miami.
A third insists you’ll find happiness somewhere between coconut trees and turquoise water.
Meanwhile, poor Iceland is apparently sitting by the phone wondering why nobody ever calls.
Canada isn’t doing much better.
Apparently, maple trees, snowy mountains, and pristine lakes aren’t moisturizing enough.
The Beauty Industry Has a Passport Preference
The beauty industry loves destinations because they tell stories faster than ingredients ever could.
Mention Hawaii, and people imagine sunshine.
Say Brazil, and they picture beaches and vibrant energy.
Reference the Caribbean, and suddenly your lotion feels like an escape instead of a moisturizer.
Consequently, brands lean toward warm destinations because they instantly communicate relaxation, indulgence, and happiness.
From a marketing perspective, it makes perfect sense.
From Iceland’s perspective, it’s starting to feel a little personal.
The Consumer Psychology of Vacation in a Bottle
From the perspective of consumer psychology, we rarely buy lotion for hydration alone.
Instead, we buy the emotion attached to it.
A tropical name transforms an ordinary bottle into a tiny mental vacation.
Likewise, beauty culture teaches us that self-care isn’t simply about soft skin.
It’s about transporting ourselves somewhere we’d rather be—even if only for thirty seconds after a shower.
That’s powerful branding.
However, it also explains why so many products sound like travel brochures.
I’d Like to Book a Flight to Saskatchewan
Personally, I’m ready for some variety.
Where’s “Moisturize Me in Montréal?”
I’d absolutely try “Icelandic Cloud Cream.”
Give me “Canadian Cabin Cashmere.”
I’d even buy “Finnish Forest Fresh.”
Imagine a lotion inspired by crisp mountain air, snowy mornings, maple forests, or the Northern Lights.
Instead, every new launch seems determined to convince me that my elbows can only become soft somewhere near a flamingo.
Frankly, tropical countries have had an incredible run.
Let’s give someone else a chance.
Maybe We Don’t Need Another Palm Tree
Perhaps the next innovation in personal care isn’t another coconut fragrance or another beach-themed collection.
Perhaps it’s realizing that beautiful stories exist far beyond tropical postcards.
The beauty industry excels at creating emotional worlds through packaging and fragrance.
Now imagine the possibilities if those worlds became a little more adventurous.
Because if every lotion wants to take us to the beach, eventually even paradise starts feeling predictable.
