Is Personal Care Becoming Too Complicated?
I recently learned that fragrance layering balms exist.
If you’re not familiar with them, they’re designed to be applied before your perfume to help the fragrance last longer.
And my first thought wasn’t…
“That’s clever.”
It was…
“Wait…that’s another step?”
Which made me wonder whether personal care routines have become more complicated than they used to be.
The Rise of Layering
Layering has become one of the biggest trends in personal care.
Today you might use:
A scented body wash.
Then a matching body scrub.
Then body lotion.
Then body oil.
Then a fragrance primer.
Then body mist.
Then perfume.
Maybe even hair perfume.
None of these products are inherently unnecessary.
Many people genuinely enjoy the ritual.
The interesting question is what happens when every new product becomes another recommended step.
When More Choices Become More Decisions
Consumer psychology has long shown that having choices is generally a good thing.
But there’s a point where more options can also mean more decisions.
Should I use the body mist before the perfume?
Does the lotion need to match the fragrance?
Would a layering balm make everything last longer?
Instead of simply enjoying a fragrance, we may start wondering whether we’re doing it correctly.
The Routine Can Become the Hobby
For many enthusiasts, that’s actually part of the fun.
Experimenting with combinations.
Creating a signature scent.
Finding products that complement one another.
The routine itself becomes a creative hobby.
And there’s absolutely nothing wrong with that.
But for someone who’s just trying to smell nice before leaving the house…
Seven steps may feel a little intimidating.
Simple Is Still an Option
One thing I appreciate about personal care is that there’s no single right way to enjoy it.
Some people love carefully layering fragrances.
Others are perfectly happy with one favorite body mist.
Neither approach is more “correct.”
The goal isn’t to complete the most steps.
The goal is to enjoy the experience.
Because sometimes the best fragrance routine is a beautifully layered masterpiece.
And sometimes it’s one spray and out the door.
