Sephora's Quiet Hours create a calmer shopping experience for sensory-sensitive customers. Here's why it's a great idea.

Why I Love Sephora’s Quiet Hours

I recently learned that Sephora launched Quiet Hours on certain days, which are geared toward people who are neurodivergent or more sensitive to sensory stimulation.

During that time, the music is softer, strong scents are minimized, and the overall shopping experience becomes much calmer.

This is an incredible idea!

A Different Kind of Luxury

When we think about the personal care industry, we usually think about products.

The next fragrance.

The newest body mist.

The latest skincare launch.

But the experience of shopping matters too.

Sometimes the greatest luxury isn’t another product.

It’s feeling relaxed enough to enjoy the ones already on the shelf.

Designing for More People

Retail spaces are exploding with sensory experiences.

Bright lights.

Music.

Fragrance.

Displays competing for your attention.

For many people, that’s exciting.

For others, it can be overwhelming.

Creating dedicated Quiet Hours recognizes that one shopping experience doesn’t fit everyone—and that’s okay.

The Psychology of Feeling Welcome

Consumer psychology tells us that people enjoy shopping more when they feel relaxed and in control.

When we’re calmer we’re more likely to notice details, explore at our own pace, and make thoughtful choices.

A Small Change That Makes a Big Difference

What I appreciate most about Quiet Hours isn’t simply that the volume is turned down.

It’s the intent behind it.

It says, “You’re welcome here too.”

Sometimes inclusion doesn’t require inventing a new product.

Sometimes it just means designing an experience that allows more people to enjoy what’s already there.

Hopefully more retailers will follow Sephora’s lead.
